New York signs Sexson while Yanks fans clear their throats

Former Mariner first baseman Richie Sexson looks to be headed to the New York Yankees. And if you’re Sexson, there couldn’t be a worse place to land.

The fact alone that he won’t be able to sit around and collect his paychecks for doing nothing is a bummer. But if he thought the Seattle fans and media were hard on him, he’s in store for a world of pain.

I wonder if Yanks fans boo him before he digs in for his first at bat or if they’ll give him one plate appearance before they unleash a barrage of expletives?

Sexson was released last week for a gaggle of reasons (body language, no desire, general cluelessness), but mostly because the guy has been hitting around .200 for the last year and a half.

According the World Wide Leader’s Buster Olney, Sexson is a good match for the Yankees because they need a right-handed slugger who hits lefties well (Sexson was hitting .344). Plus, they are getting him on the cheap. The M’s will still have to pay the nearly $6 million remaining salary while New York ponies up just $390,000.

But at least we’ll now have a reason to watch the Yankees as Sexson performs his strike out show to cascade of Bronx Boos.
