Man, this last week has absolutely sucked to be a sports fan in Seattle. We used to have the fallback of beautiful summers to take our minds off terrible teams, but that hasn’t materialized either. At one point in June, Seattle was three degrees colder than Siberia.
Last week, Seattle has been the sports equivalent of Siberia. It’s a very lonely time for the Seattle fan. We’ve endured the parade of knuckleheads who’ve testified in the Sonics lease dispute trial. It was difficult to decide whom to dislike most, the City of Seattle or the Oklahoma ownership group. Both sides are infuriating and deserve the blame when and if the Sonics leave town.
The Mariners started firing everybody last week. The canning of General Manager Bill Bavasi and good guy Manager John McLaren is what most of us wanted. But it only confirmed how dire things have gotten for the M’s. This week we'll likely see some of the players walk the plank either through trade or outright release.
But the fleece-clad crew of Seattle sports fans has endured it all, and for that you deserve a little love. You turned out for the Save Our Sonics rally and you continue to make it out to the ballpark to watch the 2008 version of the Bad News Bears.
About the Man Crush: This is a weekly installment for the blog where, for good or for bad, I’ll pick one stand-out player or sports celebrity.
