Starting pitcher Felix Hernandez took a hack at a pitch over his head and hit an opposite-field grand slam to help the M’s top the New York Mets today, 5-2.
The Seattle P-I is reporting that it’s the first home run by a pitcher in Mariners history, and the first slam by an American League pitcher since May 11, 1971.
However, Felix left the game in the fifth inning after getting spiked in the ankle during a play at the plate. No word yet on the severity of the injury, but maybe he’s well enough to play first base tomorrow. Just saying.
