Still no lack of drama in Seattle pro basketball saga

It’s been a while since we've checked in on professional basketball in Seattle. So, let’s take a look…

Yep, the team is still gone. Don’t have a new one.

However, there have been some fun developments lately pertaining to the previously-known Seattle SuperSonics and its new identity in Oklahoma City. Here's a rundown of my favorite highlights:

Owner Clay Bennett and his merry band of oil tycoons have chosen for their team the inexplicably stupid name: Oklahoma City Thunder. Actually, it hasn't really been announced yet. However, they've still done an embarrassingly inept job of keeping it a secret. For cripes sake, someone has already snapped a picture of the logo and posted it on the Internet.

Now that the Seattle Seahawks season is about to start and everyone has stopped paying attention to an NBA team that no longer exists, Howard Schultz has dropped his lawsuit against Clay Bennett and the Thunder ownership. As you might remember, Schultz was shocked (shocked!) that Bennett wanted to move the team to OKC all along and sued ClayClay for fraud. In a written statement, Schultz wrote: "I regret that I accepted those assurances and am deeply sorry for the outcome. Unfortunately, showing that the Bennett Group lied is not enough to turn back the clock and return the Sonics. As a result, I am withdrawing our lawsuit."

The Clay-Job seems to have lined himself up to be the team’s first president, edging out first-class suck up and former Sonics team president Bryan Byrnes. Thanks for your loyalty Bryan, now hit the bricks.

Washington state gubernatorial candidate Dino Rossi has a radio attack ad in heavy sports radio rotation pretty much blaming the whole Sonics debacle on incumbent Chris Gregoire. And if you listen to sports radio for any length of time, you might be convinced that every legislator up for re-election in November will be working at Starbucks in December. Oh wait, Howard Schultz is closing down those stores. It's a tough economy.

The city of Seattle spent $2,957,898 in its lease dispute case against the Sonics. That’s about three times the amount Mayor Greg Nickels said he’d spend to hold the team to its lease or about the same amount the city paid for three public toilets.

Brad Keller, Seattle attorney and OKC ownership group’s lead blood sucking leech, continued to take pot shots at Seattle fans (Hey Brad, you won – enjoy it and shut up). A group of Sonics season ticket holders are suing to block the sale of Thunder season tickets until they have first dibs at priority seating and prices they were promised a year ago. If successful, I guess they would be able to buy up some of the good seats so Oklahoma fans couldn't. "For the same people who said they would not have bought tickets last year for games here in Seattle to now say they want tickets in Oklahoma City is a farce," Keller said.

You won’t be able to watch professional basketball in KeyArena this winter, but here’s October’s jam-packed schedule of events you can enjoy. This lineup no doubt has surrounding restaurants and businesses jumping for joy. Sonics, Shmonics! Check out the action:
