This Week’s Man Crush: Ichiro

The Mariners only All-Star returned to Seattle from the bright lights of New York and the mid-summer classic where he went 1 for 3 in the AL’s win over the NL.

And when he got here, he was greeted by a chorus of detractors calling for the future hall of famer to be traded. Nice.

Token Wazzu Cougar and P-I columnist Jim Moore made national news this week when he, with a little help from ESPN dipshit Colin Cowherd, laid out their reasoning for trading Ichiro. ESPN’s original televised shouting match PTI chimed in saying the outfielder’s contract was reason enough to trade him.

Kinda left me wondering what the M’s would get in return, assuming these guys knew what they were talking about, for a mediocre, singles-hitting outfielder with a crummy contract? Here are some more thoughts about why trading Ichiro doesn’t make sense and will probably never happen.

For a Mariners fan base that seems to care so much about loyalty and becomes emotionally crippled when one their beloved leaves town (see, Alex Rodriguez, Ken Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson), they should be beside themselves that Ichiro decided to stick around past his original contract. I don’t get it.

Ichiro has responded with his bat, going 2 for 5 in each of his first two games back after the break. He also hit a 2-run, uh hum, home run yesterday.
