Morning Notes: Ichiro nears 3,000 hits, all with wood bats

M’s outfielder Ichiro Suzuki is five away from 3,000 hits as a professional baseball player. In nearly eight seasons in the major leagues he’s hit 1,717, while the rest have come playing in Japan. When asked if people will dismiss the milestone because 1,279 of his 2,995 hits came in Japan, Ichiro told the P-I: "I'm not expecting much, but I hope people realize Japanese professional baseball is not (played) with metal bats."

‘Let’s get drunk and vent.’ Probably not
Brian Robinson does some level-headed thinking and addresses the idea of launching a Save Our Sonics event at the Oklahoma vs. UW football game. He’s asking for your feedback about a possible event at SonicsCentral. He’s also got some news about ongoing dialogue with the Governor’s office – very interesting stuff as always.

Welcome back Rick
Bud Withers of the Times outlines why new UCLA football coach Rick Neuheisel ought to be back coaching college football. If you need someone to gut your football program like a fish, scatter the innards and then light them on fire – Rick is your guy. Congratulations UCLA, enjoy.

Seahawks training camp starts today
Training camp is finally starting for your beloved Seattle Seahawks. As we expected, there are some notable absences. Rookies Lawrence Jackson and John Carlson have yet to sign contracts, so they figure to miss the at least the first day until something is inked. Carlson’s lack of participation is the most glaring as fans and coaches alike hope he can be a major contributor to a thin tight end corps.

Locker doesn’t want to get his bell rung as much
Husky football fans grinded their teeth to powder last season as they watched quarterback and program savior Jake Locker tuck the ball and run. He’s a big boy, but Locker took some serious blows fighting for extra yardage. It was commendable, but Locker says he’s come to his senses and will be taking fewer risks in that regard.
