Pentland fired, M’s fans ask who is Pentland?

Mariners hitting coach Jeff Pentland was fired today – not really the ouster M’s faithful were hoping for (I’m looking in your directions Mr. Lincoln, Mr. Bavasi), and will do little or nothing to improve a light hitting team.

"Jeff has an excellent and proven track record, and those of us who have worked with him are well aware he knows hitting," GM Bill Bavasi told the P-I. "Unfortunately, we have consistently, and for an extended period, underperformed at the plate and we are hopeful that a different voice might help the situation."

The team is replacing Pentland with Lee Elia, who has been a special assistant and part time coach. I imagine many of players already know Elia. So, this really isn’t a different voice is it? This move is totally cosmetic.

The only voice most of these hitters should be hearing is that of a flight attendant on the first plane out of town.
