This Week’s Man Crush: Ken Griffey Jr.

How long before Griffey-mania reaches the realm of ridiculous? We’ve probably already hit critical mass, but who cares. The Seattle sports fan has had his teeth kicked in for nearly two years – we’re entitled to a little gratuitous slobbering. Don’t feel ashamed, this is a good thing. So, again, welcome back Junior.

And yes, I bought my opening day tickets yesterday from an online ticket broker. I’ll be in left field taking almost as many pictures of Griffey as the Japanese tourists in right field are taking of Ichiro.

I can’t say much more than has already been said, but I’m elated. If you’d like to blow off your afternoon to get geeked off Griffey stories, below is a list of links that’ll get you started. Enjoy!

  • Both Seattle papers write about how fans are already clamoring for Griffey jerseys at the Mariner team store. Here’s the Times, and here’s the P-I.

  • Hot Dog & Friends celebrate with a video.

  • The P-I’s Art Thiel weighs in on Junior’s influence on the clubhouse.

  • Seattle Times’ Jerry Brewer breaks down the details of how the deal came to be.

  • Seattle Times’ Larry Stone gives us a glimpse into the conversation Willie Mays had with Griffey before Junior decided to come back.

  • Bleeding Blue and Teal has succumbed to Griffey-mania despite thinking the signing wouldn’t be such a good thing.

  • U.S.S. Mariner has tons to sift through. You can kill your entire Saturday reading the comments. Your choice.

  • Former Seattle sportswriter Jim Caple writes a “welcome back” column about Junior on ESPN Page 2.

About the Man Crush: This is a weekly installment for the blog where, for good or for bad, I’ll highlight one stand-out player or sports celebrity.
