Dawgs get an ego-boosting shot to the crotch

This was the best possible outcome for the Washington basketball program. – making the AP top 25 (No. 23), but falling short of a ranking in the USA Today/ESPN poll. This is the first time they’ve been in a top 25 since January 2007, when they promptly went into the tank soon thereafter.

The spit between the two polls sends a clear message to the Dawgs. You’ve arrived this season, but you’ve got more to prove. It’s an ego boost and a kick in the nuts all in one. It should provide a little extra motivation before they head off on a four game road stretch against the Arizona schools, Cal and Stanford. A 2-2 trip should be viewed as a success.

The rankings are great, but the only thing that matters is the Big Dance in March - the Dawgs RPI ranking is at 28. Here’s what coach Lorenzo Romar had to say:

"Being ranked among the top-25 is certainly a compliment to where our program is right now. It is really unfortunate that a top-25 ranking in mid-January doesn't guarantee us a place in the NCAA Tournament in March. Of course, where we finish is more important to our program than where we stand right now. But, overall, the recognition is a positive thing."

UW is 15-4, 6-1 in Pac 10 play, and in sole possession of first place.
