M’s GM pick lacks imagination

The Seattle Mariners did on Wednesday what they’ve had a history of doing. They hired an old white guy as general manager to join the group of other old white guys in the M’s front office.

Not only does the hire of Jack Zduriencik lack imagination, it smacks of picking the flavor of the month. Zduriencik, 57, who was vice president and special assistant to the general manager for player personnel for the Milwaukee Brewers has been credited with building a team that made the playoffs this year. Yippie.

Apologies if I seem skeptical about the hire. But last time I checked, the Brewers haven’t won their division since they were in the AL East in the early ‘80s. How great of a team is it when you have to fire the manager with a couple weeks left in the season, just to get the club to pay attention again? Didn’t we just go through this two or three times before? And have the expectations been lowered that far? Just make the playoffs once before we blow up the team? That’s the goal? Sounds great.

I’m sure the M’s head offices will be buzzing with fun-filled stories about what it was like growing up in the 1950s. And that’ll be fun for all involved. M’s fans can look forward to future teams that have just enough talent to finish around .500 and maybe make a playoff run, only to then fizzle down the stretch.

The M’s had a chance to take the club in a new direction. Bring someone in with fresh ideas and new approaches. Dodgers assistant general manager Kim Ng could have been that person. Jerry Dipoto, the Arizona Diamondbacks director of player personnel, could have been that person.

But, no, it’s more of the same. You gotta of love these old guys!
