The Chicago White Sox will square off against the Minnesota Twins today in a one-game playoff. I’m hoping for a White Sox win because having this Chicago club in the playoffs is good for baseball. The entertainment factor for baseball fans, or at least this fan, triples if the White Sox advance. Here are a few reasons why:Ozzie Guillen – The White Sox manager is a train wreck in the best possible sense of the phrase. Like if the cast of “Jackass” got a hold of an empty Amtrak train and tried to jump it across Lake Michigan. You know you shouldn’t be watching, but you can’t help it. You love it. You just don’t know what he’s going to say or do. If I could invite four sports celebrities to dinner, Ozzie would be on the list along with Charles Barkley, Mark Cuban and Lou Piniella.
Junior – The last time Ken Griffey, Jr. was in the playoffs was 1997 with the Seattle Mariners. That was the same year he earned the AL most valuable player award. Because I’m in the bag for Junior, I’d like to see him get a ring before his legs force him to hang ‘em up.
Chicago World Series – A White Sox win would bring us one step closer to an all Chicago World Series. If you’re not emotionally invested in one of these teams, this scenario is a win-win. If the Cubs win, we could finally put to rest the whole “we’re cursed” thing – like we did for the Red Sox. And then we could start dreading Cubbie Nation – like we did for the Red Sox. Unfortunately for Cubs fans, a White Sox win would propel Cubbie Nation into unseen depths of despair. Check that, Seattle holds the pole position on that one.
