Why is Mariners president Chuck Armstrong allowed to make any plans regarding the future of this team? He’s ushered this team through 20-plus years of futility (sorry, almost getting to the World Series is loser rationalization).
In a pair of interviews this week, one with the Seattle Times and one with Los Angeles Times, Armstrong signaled the end of free agent signings and a move towards a total rebuild.
“It’s not going to be a quick fix, because we’re going to have to grind through some of these contracts we’ve obligated ourselves to,” told the Los Angeles Times. “Our attendance is going to go down in connection with our performance, and as chief operating officer here it’s my job to be fiscally and financially responsible, so you’re not going to see the Mariners go out and commit high dollars to free agents.”
Aside from the fact that I agree that it is time to go young, his track record, nor CEO Howard Lincoln’s record, has proven that they should be making any decisions regarding the future of this club. The fact alone that they are in charge of hiring the next general manager makes me cringe.
Oh, and also get ready to be shamed to death by Mariners brass when they think attendance is drastically falling – which it won’t. There’s still no better place to be than Safeco Field after work, having a couple beers and watching a game.
