Serious test for secondary unlikely to come from Bears

The Seahawks secondary will have a shot at redemption Saturday night against Chicago, but the Bears passing game doesn’t appear as if it will give Seattle too many problems. If it does, and the Bears throw all over the field, we’ll know how much trouble the secondary is in.

Much maligned Bears quarterback Rex Grossman will get the start over Kyle Orton and has had to endure shots from former teammates this week. Former Bears wide receiver, now Carolina Panther, Muhsin Muhammad told Sports Illustrated that Chicago is “where receivers go to die.” Former Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson told CBS Sportsline.com that Grossman was “brittle” and “soft.”

The quarterback who is getting the most fan attention in Chicago is backup Caleb Hanie. In last Thursday’s loss to Kansas City, Hanie completed 9 of 16 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. The fans are burning for more playing time for Hanie who is an undrafted rookie out of Colorado State.

Neither Orton nor Grossman had terrific games against the Chiefs as they both stumbled and fumbled around in the 24-20 loss to KC. Orton started against the Chiefs, going 7 of 10 for 56 yards and a fumble.

Apparently, Bears fans gave Grossman the near-silent treatment when he trotted onto the field late in the first half to relieve Orton. Then the fans let him have it when he threw an incompletion to finish a go-nowhere drive. I love Bears fans. Grossman finished 4 of 8 for 44 yards and a touchdown.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson lit up the Seahawks secondary on Friday, completing 8 of 11 passes for 118 yards and one touchdown, the longest for 28 yards. Minnesota’s first 11 plays were passes.

Corner Marcus Trufant was especially terrible - blowing coverage, missing a key tackle and committing a pass interference penalty in the end zone that gave the Vikings the ball at the 1-yard line, leading to a touchdown. Go Cougs.
