Mariners lose, nobody cares

The Mariners continued their downward spiral by losing to the Angels 4-2 in front of a smattering of fans, most of whom were talking on their cell phones or holding up "Happy Birthday" signs for left fielder Raul Ibanez.

The Angels jumped on M's starting pitcher Jarrod Washburn early and often before he was, as is now custom, pulled after 5-1/3 innings. The hometown nine didn't hit, couldn't pitch early in the game and booted the ball once. The loss drops them 13 games out of first place - just in case you were still keeping track.

Publicly the M's are still holding out hope that things can turn around. In 1995, the team was worse off before it made its historic run to the playoffs, saving baseball in Seattle. Looking up and down this current roster, you could safely say there will be no such run this season.

It's only a matter of time, one would hope, that the M's brass pull themselves away from planning the next Ichiro bobblehead night and decide to blow up the team. Bring up the youngsters and see what you've got down there.

Or at the very least, bring back the powder blue road uniforms and give me something entertaining to watch.
